German Regional Operator Selects Versatile Platform For Routing And Processing Of High-Quality Content

COLOGNE, GERMANY - BigBand Networks, Inc., a leading provider of network platforms for video, voice and data services, today announced that NetCologne has deployed the BigBand BMR® (Broadband Multimedia-Service Router). The operator is using the platform to control the channel line-up, bandwidth efficiency and video quality for all digital cable subscribers it serves in the Cologne and Bonn areas.

"To provide the best services for our subscribers in a competitive marketplace, NetCologne prioritizes innovative, versatile and solidly integrated platforms like the BigBand BMR," said Guido Schwarzfeld, Head of Broadband Communications NetCologne. "BigBand Networks has been a strong partner for NetCologne, providing a range of necessary digital cable functionality, and we look forward to future collaborations that further enhance our offerings and operations."

The BigBand BMR integrates media processing and network communication technologies for a range of functionality. NetCologne is utilizing BigBand Digital TV Management on the platform for GUI (graphical user interface) control over the carriage and channel placement of each digital program. The deployment also employs RateShaping® bit rate adaptation, which is designed to maintain high video quality while containing cumulative bandwidth utilized within capacity constraints.

"NetCologne is one of the most technologically sophisticated regional operators in Europe, further validated by the selection of the BigBand BMR which efficiently provides a complete solution for all functionality required today, and can be scaled and expanded as future needs arise," said Sam Kershaw, vice president EMEA sales for BigBand Networks. "This deployment further extends BigBand Networks' leadership in infrastructure for digital television offerings throughout Germany, and underscores our commitment to working with technologically advanced regional operators like NetCologne."
