BigBand Networks to Demonstrate Latest Video Innovations at CableLabs(r) Winter Conference

Next-Generation Switched Digital Video Solution Selected for CableLabs Innovations Showcase

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Feb. 6, 2008 – BigBand Networks, Inc., (NASDAQ: BBND) will demonstrate a variety of video innovations at next week’s CableLabs^® Winter Conference Sun., Feb. 10 – Tues., Feb.12. These include advances in switched digital video and the personalization of programming. BigBand has also been selected by the conference organizers to participate in its Innovation Showcase, an honor reserved for a fraction of attending vendors.

BigBand’s Innovations Showcase presentation will outline how cable operators can enhance picture quality and increase spectrum density by delivering switched digital video and on-demand streams in variable-bit-rate (VBR) formats. BigBand’s approach is designed to reduce the cost of implementing VBR by removing the need for a video reduction engine in the hub, instead pre-processing streams in the headend and dynamically alternating among bit rates at the edge of the cable network.

BigBand’s Winter Conference demonstrations also include:

• Advanced Advertising with Switched Unicast.  Switched unicast is a form of switched digital video in which each active subscriber receives a dedicated stream. This demonstration highlights the ability of switched unicast to enable cable operators to deliver different advertisements and embed customized promotional messages that map to individual viewer’s interests. BigBand’s switched unicast architecture is designed to coexist with existing linear advertising systems to allow operators to gradually migrate to greater levels of addressability.
• IPTV Delivery. This demonstrates a new concept designed to allow cable operators to incorporate delivery of IP video by leveraging existing network equipment and management systems.
• Switched Video Analysis.  This demonstration illustrates the benefits of BigBand’s powerful SDV analysis application that enables improvements in bandwidth efficiency, capacity planning, monitoring and troubleshooting.
