The BigBand SVA features an innovative architecture comprised of a collection engine, data warehouse, reporting engine, and web-based User Interface. The market-leading platform leverages standards-based Linux OS and Oracle DB technology.
The collection engine provides real-time tracking of subscriber’s set-top box activity and accurate collection of a broad range of channel audience and performance diagnostic data. The platform is uniquely differentiated in that the collection engine gets its data from BigBand’s powerful industry-proven SBSS (Switch Broadcast Session Server), a key component of BigBand’s widely deployed SDV solution.
The current monitoring capacity of a single SVA server is over 1,000,000 tuners, and there is no limit to the number of channels that can be monitored. The data warehouse stores all subscriber activity gathered by the collection engine. It is built on an Oracle database that resides on a large, secure and fault tolerant RAID Array to provide storage of information for long term trend analysis.
The reporting engine pulls data from the data warehouse to build customized reports. These reports provide operators valuable insight into traffic patterns and viewership data, allowing cable operators to optimize program lineups and enhance utilization of network infrastructure. The web based User Interface provides easy and intuitive access to the customized reports. Reports can also be saved as PDF files for sharing via email, or as CSV (Comma Separated Values) exports for further analysis in other software packages.
In addition to the cost and performance benefits already described, the ability to collect accurate viewership data full-time introduces new revenue opportunities thru content personalization, addressable advertising and market research.
All subscriber information gathered by the platform is anonymized to ensure consumer privacy in adherence to the US Cable Privacy Act of 1984.

Statistics Collection and Analysis Benefits
The BigBand SVA platform benefits operators at all critical stages of switched digital video deployments. It is designed to provide the metrics needed to improve efficiency of video networks and to reduce operating expenses. It gathers metrics that allow operators to make informed decisions about program expansion and network design and helps operators determine where to roll out new programming and advertising to increase revenue and improve viewer satisfaction and engagement.
Insights into Traffic Patterns
Prior to installation, operators must assess which programs in their broadcast lineup are the best candidates for SDV. BigBand SVA allows the operator to collect viewership statistics for available programming and identify niche programming, also called ‘long tail content’.

Optimizing Program Lineups
Once the deployment begins, an operator can use SVA to monitor both switched and broadcast programming in real-time to measure channel popularity, and identify additional long tail content best suited for switched SDV.

Managing Infrastructure Performance
Once the installation has been completed, SVA monitoring can be extended to a broad range of performance and reliability metrics to optimize network utilization, and for service assurance purposes. SVA is designed to identify trends, such as unanticipated viewership changes, that can impact system performance and content delivery before they impact subscribers.

Exploring New Revenue Opportunies
In addition to the cost and performance benefits already described, namely capacity planning and diagnostics, the ability to collect accurate viewership data on a continuous basis introduces new revenue opportunities.
Content Personalization:
- Collection of viewership data allows content and subscriber interests to be accurately correlated, new content can then be created and delivered to subscribers that better meets their interests. This could be offered as a premium service, or at no additional charge to increase customer loyalty results.
Addressable Advertising:
- Matching ads more closely to subscribers interests, since marketers are willing to pay more for targeted advertising.
Viewership Market Research:
- In contrast to third-party research firms that typically collect broadbrush viewership data, the SVA platform can provide insights into channel audience behavior that would otherwise be missed.
